Julie Overbaugh
Sunday, July 28
Introduction
Let me introduce myself---my name is Julie Nichols Overbaugh. I live in Anchorage, Alaska with my husband, Bill, my sons Willie, age 10, and Jeffery, age 8. I am a Mom, a wife, and an outdoorswoman. I am licensed as an RN and an EMT-Paramedic. I work as a RN in the Emergency Department and as a Flight Nurse doing Medevacs in Alaska. I was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. I went to University of Illinois and earned a B.S. in Ecology, Ethology and Evolution and a B.A. in Psychology. I earned my Paramedic Certificate from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, New Mexico. And I earned my RN from San Juan College in Farmington, New Mexico.

Twenty years, this summer, I dreamed of moving west to New Mexico. And I did. That is where I got my introduction to Public Lands. Up to then, my idea of public lands was Portage Park and the Chicago Forest Preserves. When I moved out west, I began to discover public lands. I started to recreate in them by hiking. One of my first big hikes was Sandia Peak, Albuquerque, New Mexico. I climbed up and down La Luz Trail in November of 1982. It was thrilling and dangerous and intriguing and I was hooked!
The next year I discovered mountain biking and then I started kayaking the southwestern rivers. For me being outdoors is the best place to be. The only thing better is being outdoors with my family. Anyway, that is the short version of how public lands became so important in my life.

I lived out west for 20 years – 16 years in New Mexico and the last 4 years in Alaska.
I met and married my husband in New Mexico and our sons were born in New Mexico. And now we live in Alaska, which has several lifetimes of adventure in public lands to be had. As a family we are trying to capture as many of those experiences as we can.

When my girlfriend, Ashley, forwarded me the application for the American Frontiers-A Public Lands Journey-I was instantly intrigued. I was so excited about the prospect of seeing more of the Public Lands, which have long played such a large role in my life. And I have to admit the prospect of stepping out of my hectic busy daily life to have a sabbatical of sorts was absolutely attractive. Of course the downside is that I am away from my loved ones. I miss them very much. I am also missing 2 months of my sons growing up.
