Thursday, August 1
Thursday, August 1. Apgar campground 7:00 a.m.

Last night’s temperature was projected to drop into the mid- to low thirties with the possibility of frost. It doesn’t seem quite that cold, although it is probably in the low 40s right now. A neighboring camper has started a fire, and I’m torn between writing—it appears I’m behind—and joining him for a chat while I warm myself. I’m wearing my heavy fleece jacket, at which I laughed when it was distributed during the training week at Tooele, UT, where the temperatures reached the mid-90s each day. Instead, I slip on the lined raincoat and fleece gloves. A stocking cap would be a nice addition.
Everyone except Charlie and I are “sleeping in” this morning, even Paul, who has been up and about before me every day so far. Charlie has gone for a walk and left the heavy-duty phone with me. But the trailers are locked and there is no chance for a cup of coffee until someone with keys stirs.
Yesterday was a big day for the trek, as we sent the trekkers off on the first leg from Chief Mountain at the Canadian border. The “techies”—Georgie and Scott—arrived with their satellite uplink equipment, and it was necessary to haul their trailer to St. Marys on the east side of the park to provide the video phone capacity to air the event back to Washington for the National Geographic Society’s Press Club breakfast. I had already drawn one of two short straws to qualify as a support team viewer of the event and so served as a driver of Dave’s Jeep to pull the high-tech trailer. Actually, all but Steven went to the send-off, thanks to Dave’s agreement to our request that we all wanted to participate.
The video phone session had its problems, but it served its purpose of introducing the trekkers to the press—and presumably the public. Geordie labored for a half-hour or more just at achieving a connection that was satisfactory, then was forced to reconnect several times. Only the North Trekking Team was introduced on camera; the South Team could not connect. Instead, Executive Producer Ken Chapman read the list of South Team trekkers and support staff to the media.
I’m getting better at the camping thing. The tent goes up and comes down much more quickly. Hmmm. Just as I finish the last statement, above, Steven walks by and informs me that I have my tent fly on upside-down.
