Meeting moose in the woods is one of the perks of traveling through Montana

Meeting moose in the woods is one of the perks of traveling through Montana

Dear America:
Field report day 6-
The first six days of the Public Lands Trek have been filled with exciting new sights and experiences. I have never been so thrilled to do a project in my life. Since this is my first time in Glacier National Park I was not sure of what to expect. Wow! The grandeur of this park is spectacular.
We started with a three day backpacking trip from the Canadian border up the Belly River through a fantastic valley. The trail system in this park is probably the best I have ever hiked on. We were fortunate to meet with the Superintendents of the two National Parks, Glacier and the Canadian Waterton Lakes Park, in the backcountry on the second day. We took a break near the Dawn Mist Falls.
The third day we climbed out of the valley toward Ptarmigan Tunnel. As we moved above timberline and into the sub alpine region of the park the view opened to wonderful vistas. I walked through the tunnel to more views of this magnificent park.
I began reflecting on my freedom as an American, vis-à-vis, the public lands that I enjoy so much. I again realized how fortunate I am to be able to visit and use our great legacy. This gift that we have been given should be enjoyed by all Americans. As an educator I hope to bring our public lands to our country’s school children.
The next two days involved day hikes that took me over Piegan Pass in the clouds, near a moose cow and her calf, down to Siyeh Bend on the Going-to-the-Sun Highway, and climbing Ousel Peak. The second of those day hikes involved the steepest trail I have ever been on and the hardest off trail experience I have ever done. We (the trek team and the District Ranger for the Flathead National Forest) hiked cross-country over ground that would make a mountain goat cry. After reaching the top of a very steep ridge we again join the trail to hike down to the Hungry Horse Reservoir. This was a glorious day.
Our sixth day led us back to the same trail we finished yesterday to learn how to repair trails. The Bob Marshall Foundation, which is a non-profit foundation dedicated to help maintain the trail system in the huge Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex, trained us and lead us on a trail restoration project. I know that my freedom as an American involves the responsibility to protect the legacy we have been given.
Tomorrow we continue our adventure in the ‘Bob’.
