Wednesday, August 7
Wednesday, August 7. KOA campground near West Glacier 7:00 p.m.

Another day, another move. I understand why the pioneers failed to produce great literature—they couldn’t find time to write! We are back at KOA—same campsites—with mixed feelings. Other campsites, such as the last two we’ve visited, are in the wild and therefore much more aesthetically pleasing. On the other hand, KOA is handy, it has showers, laundry, and a pool and hot tub. Besides, it is the site of two of my upcoming presentations. We are at the edge of the woods, too, so we’re not surrounded by other campers.
We sent the trekkers off on an eight-day packing trip through the Bob Marshall Wilderness (“The Bob”) this morning. Paul and I volunteered to drive the Hondas to take them to Meadow Creek “Packer’s Roost” because we wanted to see the Meadow Creek gorge. Good idea—it was spectacular, and I got a good photo or two as the trekkers rode their horses over the bridge: Dana on “Phantom,” Rob on “Jet,” Charlotte on “Ricochet,” Mike on “Remington,” and Wayne on “Pawnee.” They were advised to ride two or three miles, then walk one until they got used to the saddle. The Spotted Bear District Forest Service Ranger Deb Muchlow and four packers accompanied them, as did a string of six or eight pack animals, mostly mules. Mules are stronger and smarter than horses, I was told, and they will stay with a horse, even if they are not tied.
Last night, Ranger Muchlow and her employees and volunteers invited us to a potluck dinner at the ranger station. Of course, it was delicious—bbq ribs, potatoes, salad, and topped off with several variations of huckleberry pie with ice cream. After dinner, we adjourned (chair in hand) to the yard of one of the restored log buildings on the property. The staff presented a skit about several men who were rangers in the area during the early days and some history of the area’s development. When one player was asked to tell a bear story (it seems that all rangers have bear stories), I noticed two small animals moving in the forest behind the building. I thought they were dogs. “Bear!” someone gasped, and everyone rose in unison to get a better view. A momma bear—grizzly!—and two cubs. They were lighter in color than the darker brown which is more normal for grizzlies, and although everyone looks for them, they are infrequently sighted. It was a great thrill not only for us but for the Forest Service staff as well.
The trekkers did trail maintenance yesterday. They were accompanied and directed by Carla Belski, who administers the Bob Marshall Wilderness Foundation, and volunteers Russ Lucas and Paul Travis. The group commonly does some 40 projects per year, ranging from one to 21 days in length. Nine board members and a large number of volunteers conduct the operations (60-70 volunteers, many of them retired persons). One of the projects they were particularly proud of was the restoration of the three building at the ranger station. Last year they had a group of at-risk 15 and 16-year olds from an eastern city. “We opened their eyes,” said Paul, but the kids were not as impressed as the staff had hoped they would be. Their web site is Deb Mucklow chairs the foundation.
