Let's go fishin'
Bob Marshall Wilderness

I’m sitting here on the bank of the middle fork of the beautiful Flathead River, over 30 miles from the nearest trailhead. Our backcountry mountain guides from Double Arrow outfitters have been fishing with us all day. It was my first time fishing on a river, and it was so much fun. I started with a spinning reel and caught two western slope cutthroat trout, then I tried the fly rod and caught two more. The fly rod is much more technical and much more fun. People come from all over to fish this river, it’s one of the most famous fly fishing spots in the world. Guess what’s for dinner?

This is our third day of an eight day horsepack trip. We covered 20 miles the first day and 16 the second, but today is a layover day, something to be enjoyed. It’s also the first sunny day we’ve had. These are real cowboys and cowgirls we’re traveling with—there’s Jack and Belinda, the owners of the guide company, then there’s Randy, Dwayne, and Rayanne who help with the tiedowns and the cooking. Deb Muklow, the district ranger for the Flathead National Forest has also been riding with us and I have to say it’s kind of cool having the boss with us. Deb and the trail guides are very knowledgeable and always willing to answer our questions. Yesterday when we visited the Big Prairie Ranger Station Deb brought the crew their mail and they were very excited to get it. The crew there has ten days on and four days off; they never know when the mail is going to come and it’s their only real connection with the outside world.

Nights on the trail are filled with storytelling around the campfire. These cowboys are real characters and I really enjoy their company. They all carry guns which is something I don’t see too often in New York. They explained they were more for putting down a lame horse than for shooting grizzlies. Being out here makes me feel like I’m in one of those old western movies and it’s more fun than I could have imagined. We don’t stop laughing from the time we sit down to breakfast till the time we go to bed. I’ve had no trouble sleeping and am exhausted every night.

The day before we left on our trip the folks at the Spotted Bear Ranger Station had a potluck dinner for us. After the dinner the rangers put on a little play about the early days of forestry. We were sitting right outside the ranger station and as they were telling us a grizzly story we actually saw a sow grizzly and two cubs about 50 yards away. It was the highlight of the trip and the most exciting encounter with wildlife so far. It’s amazing to think that this place has all its original predators—grizzlies, mountain lions, black bears—as well as all the other wildlife. This morning a couple deer walked through our camp and earlier we saw a couple cranes flying overhead. It just doesn’t get any better than this. God bless America.
