The Long Drive
Someone pointed out to me that three weeks from today we will all head home. I have mixed feelings about that. Id like to see my family and friends, but I know it will be difficult to leave my new family and to live indoors again. Today has been a long day of driving. We left Wahweap Bay at 9:30 a.m. Arizona time. Its 6:12 p.m. Utah time and were on the ferry to get to Bullfrog Bay. We drove a lot today through John Wayne country. We stopped in Navajo country at National Monument. Some of the mesas have worn down to buttes or spires. I guess they resemble monuments. I did have a little challenge driving on the Moqui Dugway. The warning signs began eight miles away: Not recommended for RVs or trucks pulling trailers. Bob asked me did I feel comfortable tackling the road, and I gave him the thumbs up. It was sort of like the mule ride up the Grand Canyon: a dusty, steep trail with sharp turns on the switchbacks. Bob said I handled it like a pro. I must confess I didnt look down the sharp dropoffs, and I hugged the inside rock wall as I was driving.
I contacted Joan Mayer from the Park Service as soon as we reached the lodge in Bullfrog. She is the one instrumental in setting up my presentation at the Lake Powell School. She had arranged a plane flight from Page, but since the support team had to drive to Bullfrog, and Im responsible for a truck and trailer, then I drove rather than flew. I look forward to these school presentations. I just wish Jan and Cathy could be there with me. We make a great team. Unfortunately for me they are out on Lake Powell too far away to help me out.
