11 Months...
Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex

I could write about the breathtaking scenery we saw today or the 8 hours we spent in the saddle, or the two passes we went over, one being the Continental Divide. But more important than all that is the significance of today. So today’s entry will be different.

Today, August 11, marks 11 months since my brother Mike was murdered doing the job he loved so much at the World Trade Center. Mike was so proud to be a New York City Fireman and wouldn’t have had it any other way. Mike took part in many rescues in his 8 year career in Brooklyn. He once saved a construction worker from literally drowning in wet concrete after a building that was under construction collapsed. He also saved a couple firemen when their exit was suddenly blocked by walls of flame. Mike, with the help of his engine company, quickly knocked down the fire and the brothers were saved from being burnt.

Mike was also rescued from a fire himself. He had a hoseline and was advancing toward a fire when the floor gave out and he fell into a hole. Luckily he didn’t fall into any fire and only suffered minor injuries, but they thought it was much worse at first.

The biggest rescue, of course, was his last. Mike and 342 other NYC Fire Department personnel were part of the biggest rescue anywhere, anytime—an estimated 15 – 25 thousand people made it out of the World Trade Center.

Mike, I couldn’t be more proud of you. I only imagine the horror you saw that morning. I know you must have thought it might be your last “job”. Mike, we used to have to go on vacations together to enjoy them together. I know you are on this trek with me, so now you will never miss another vacation I go on. Your smile was on my mind all day today as it is everyday, but especially today.

Isn’t this awesome? I will leave you all with a quote that Mike had hanging over his desk:

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones that you did. So cast off you bowlines, sail away from your safe harbor, catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore, dream, discover.
