The Lesson at Eagle Peak
Jessica and I were waiting for the trekkers to finish a hike on this sunny afternoon by Eagle Peak. Jim Christianson was our guide for the day, and was truly a wonderful gentleman. He knew the land better than the map, and corrected the route for Jan, who later said that the GPS route almost exactly fit Jim’s sketches.

Anyway, Jim had led Jessica and me up to the rendezvous point and hiked down to meet the trekkers, while Jessica and I waited for a couple hours. During our wait, a truck with a couple of older men and a woman drove up the road leading to the peak. On the way down 45 minutes later (still waiting), the driver hollered a hello and inquired as to where we were from. We explained our mission to him and got to talking about public land. As it turned out, he used to work with Jim and worked on a fire tower several peaks over. After he stopped saying nice things about Jim, he proceeded to say nice things about public land. He really knew what he was talking about, and had a very good way of looking at it. As near as I could remember, he said, “What I tell folks is: ‘If you can imagine the poorest little black kid in Harlem, he owns that tree every bit as much as you or I do.’” Which is precisely right. In this wonderful country of ours, EVERY citizen is a part of the government, and EVERY citizen owns 600,000,000 acres of land. We talked a bit more, then, with a big smile and a wave, which seemed to be the custom there, his truck leisurely ambled off down the road.
