Courage On Eagle Mountain
Itís mid-August and Iím dumbstruck by the greenery and fields of flowers of this stretch of New Mexico land. Weíre still in the Gila National Forest but in a rarely visited spot southeast of Reserve, New Mexico, about 40 miles. Last night from where we departed our horse people to the campground at Snow Lake, we passed miles of rolling meadows carpeted with vibrant green grass. We stopped to watch a large herd of elk, all cows and calves, flow across a meadow.
Today we crossed on foot more stunning meadows, one blanketed with lavender blossoms. From there we entered a canyon and began an ascent of Eagle Mountain, which was not a difficult climb had the previous two weeks been easy, which they werenít. To be more accurate todayís climb was easy by many standards but difficult by team standards. We travel as fast as our slowest team member, period.
We are at various stages of fatigue and exhaustion, but a breaking point was neared by one member, our spiritual cheerleader and motivational strongman, Cathy Kiffe. Near the top she stumbled on a thick tree branch which aroused a reaction not typical of Cathy: she speared the trail several times with the point of her trekking pole. I asked her about it, and she said she didnít know what to say. It would come out later.
More hard steps up and her breathing became erratic, and we stopped to assess the situation and talk about what may be happening. It was simpler to assess what was happening than for Cathy to talk about it, but she knew. Iíll say it. Compared to the others on the trekking team, she had pushed harder against greater odds to get where we were, and her body was telling her to take a break.
Having the courage to decide to take a two-day break means Cathy was looking at the bigger picture - finishing the trek and staying fresh enough to perceive our public lands and speak for them - and the entire team is proud of her.
Her alternate, Kay Gandy, who just days ago learned that her dissertation went through making her Dr. Kay Gandy, will step in to bridge the gap for Cathy. Weíre expecting to learn a thing or two.
