We’ve spent the night in our new camp at Aspen Grove outside of Lincoln Montana. Its one of the most comfortable sites we’ve set up in. It’s spacious and quiet with a clear stream running along side. The sound of the water is soothing and comforting and inviting, just waiting for hot and tired feet. My team mate Michelle and I ran a few errands in town, well, the small town of Lincoln. We had lunch at a rustic charm café; the “Ponde Rosa”, where I swear the waitress called everybody “Hon”, and actually asked somebody if they wanted a “cuppa’ Joe”. I loved it. Just about everyone we meet in Montana is so nice and hospitable. Not only do they want to hear all about our public lands journey, they share their stories, their history, and their livelihood to provide input and background for our adventure.

I’m getting better at identifying trees, shrubs, flowers, insects and animals - just how many kinds of squirrels can there be? We have a camp book for reference, and I’m on my way on becoming the VERY amateur naturalist. It’s another one of those life skills I’m getting more and more practice with on this journey. At least I should know the difference between a ptarmigan and a, well, anything else.

Incidentally, today is my birthday. While I do miss my family and friends for a more traditional celebration (toasting a fine cabernet with the “Alaska Girls”, the “little spending money” check from my dad), this experience, along with being with some great people in a truly majestic and magical place will be one of the most memorable for a long time. Last night we saw shooting stars, I got up this morning and ran my hands along some sagebrush, inhaled its intoxicating fragrance, and looked up at blue sky.
