A Day Off, Sort Of
The locals don’t have much good to say about the fishing or swimming in Luna Lake. The lake is just down slope from where we’re camped for two nights so it’s natural for us to inquire about its recreational qualities. Mosquito swatting is the first discovery we made all on our own.
This is a much-needed day off, sort of. We’re looking forward to a program about Mexican wolves tonight.
But until then, 7 p.m., we’re free to just be. Last night I thought about what I wanted to do today. All I could think about was sleeping until I was good and ready to get up and slowly working my way through a couple cups of coffee.
Midway through my third cup of coffee, our team mustered to move the trailer with the computers and satellite dish. We couldn’t catch the attention of satellites where it was located. If the move works and a satellite connection is made, we’ll be able to get internet connection and upload a new batch of journal entries. If you’re reading this we’ve been successful and a weeks’ worth of my journal entries are available to you. Email me with your questions and comments.
It’s been three weeks away from home and we’re missing our family and friends.
Last night our cook, Lorie, had some moments of despair. She misses her husband of 19 years who is also her best friend of nearly 30 years.
Two months away from a lifemate is a long time.
My wife, Chris, is always on my mind. She’s home alone with the kitten she received from me for her birthday just ten days before I began this journey. Mo Mo Monster, the bob-tailed kitten, is a delight.
When I speak to Chris on the phone she tells me the next new adventure in the life of Mo Mo. Mo Mo can now climb the screen door to its top. Even small kittens can land reliably on their feet. Chris laughs, I laugh, and I am reminded of the things I miss about Chris.
When she laughs the whole world for me lights up. All is right in the world.
Chris said she recently went to the movie Goldmember. She said she laughed all the way through the movie. I wasn’t there with her, holding her hand and laughing too. I can’t get that back.
Although Chris supports me fully and my decision to participate in American Frontiers, it’s hard on her. I owe her big time.
We are often told by people we meet along the way that they’re envious of us and ready to step in. We know we are fortunate but each of us has first-hand accounts of how this is not a bed of roses. It’s hard work.
Free moments and “me” time are in large part a thing of the past and a hope for the future. With rare exception we are required to be traveling or mindful. Movies, television, newspapers - like I said in an earlier entry my watch tells me what day it is. That’s my news.
But I know that most of my best adventures - and I’ve had many around the world - are filled with tales of woe and hardship. It’s not really an adventure if the outcome is not in doubt. This Journey is an undeniable adventure, and I wouldn’t have missed it for the world.
