This is my top ten list for my Favorite Things About This Trek. This top ten list is inspired by my brother Ian, whose Top Ten Lists have been entertaining readers since he was back at college at UNC Chapel Hill, writing for the Daily Tar Heel. I don't pretend to have his wit or skills but this list has been forming in my mind for some time and it's time to put it to paper.

10. My beautiful friend Hayley Schmidt. Now what does my friend have to do with this trek, you might ask. Well, I wouldn't be here if she wasn't graciously cat-sitting my two animals for these months. Every time I go into a grocery store and get near the pet food isle, I'm reminded of my former apartment in New York, with my best friend and my best cats hanging out together. Friends like Hayley are few and far between. Even though she keeps threatening to shave Zooey. He's extremely furry and extremely fat.

9. Equate Facial Wipes. They are a generic brand of wipes that rock my world. They are soft, moisturizing, and you can wash just about any part of you at any time and feel about a billion times better than you did when you were dirty.

8. Dirt. I love the dirt. I love the dust, the sweat, the fact that none of us can bathe as often as we'd like. There's nothing we can do about it so we just deal with it and constantly joke about our own stinkiness. In fact, we've all come up with Spice Girl hiking names, and mine happens to be Dirty Spice. We have Indian Spice, Foxy Chocolate Spice, Surly Spice, Old Spice, Vanilla Spice... I'll let ya'll guess who is who.

7. My Thermarest Ground Pad. Donated by my wonderful friend, and soon-to-be sister-in-law Tessa. It self-inflates, it lets me sleep on rocks, it makes a cool hissing noise when I squeeze the air out of it. I might sleep on it when I get home.

6. My Pack Towl. I know I'm on a gear kick here, but you can't believe what a difference good gear makes. Now usually I have a knee-jerk reaction to not buy any product that creates a silly spelling for their product, but I cannot deny the greatness of this towel. After a shower, I can dry my whole body with this little towel, wrap the length of my hair in it for a minute or two, and then hang it up and within about twenty minutes it is completely dry. It boggles the mind. It is so soft, so absorbent, wicked cool.

5. My team. Not to get gushy here, but every single person on the support team has done or said something to endear them to me forever. They are funny and beautiful and learned and open. Even when they smell bad.

4. The three dogs that came with the techies. The techies have their own trailer, and don't camp right with the rest of the team, but we get to hang with them pretty often, at meals and when we are working on the computers. With them are three dogs- Porter and Lucy, both black labs, and Rex, a Border Collie and Great Perinese mix. These dogs are aweswome. They are watch dogs, stick-fetchers, players, and lovers. My days are better if dogs are nearby.

3. Bedtime. It's always been my favorite part of the day, particularly when I'm working very hard on a particular project, and it certainly applies here. Also, bedtime here involves falling asleep in a cozy sleeping bag, listening to the sounds of the forest.

2. Hiking. Now this may seem obvious, but hiking is about the most fun thing in the world. You use every muscle of your body, your brain focuses on the three steps ahead and is otherwise free to roam, your legs and your hips warm into the rhythm and feel like they can go mile after mile after mile.

1. My Merrel hiking boots. This is connected to #2, but definitely need their own slot. These boots seem to climb mountains all on thier own, adhering to rocks, refusing to slip, never giving me a blister, never letting me down. They are the best footwear I have ever owned.

So that's it for now. I'm sure a new list will form as the trek wears on. I hope I've done Ian proud.
