Reach for the Sky!

It is truly a wonderful thing when new technology actually works the way it is meant to. Yesterday was Saturday, August 17 and we were all looking forward to a relaxing day in the backcountry near Helena, MT up on the Continental Divide. We had negotiated a treacherous road up to our campsite near Meyers Hill the day before and were unable to get the RV and Tech Trailer to the camp site, which gave the Tech Team (me) a day of some rest, only requiring some early morning map production for the Trek Team to help them find their way. By using waypoints along the route plotted on the detailed topo maps at specific locations which might be troublesome to locate, they were able to stay on the planned route and avoid private lands. The eye in the sky (that is, the 12-satellite GPS constellation) proved again to be an invaluable help to this expedition.
But when we got up to our next campsite near the historic site where the first Masonic meeting in Montana was held on Mullan Pass, we ran into some serious trouble with our Motosat satellite dish. After about 2 hours of frustration and cell phone calls to an 800 number (Ground Control provides 7x24 service for sat dish communications problems) and to Geordie, I finally gave up for a quick dinner. Just before I stopped to eat I discovered 3 coax cables that had managed to work themselves loose. Sure enough, after I took a break and ate some food, I went to try again and was successful in getting linked to the communications satellite that connects our team to the rest of the world via the Internet. Everyone was overjoyed and as many as 6 people took turns uploading photos, reading email, adding journal entries and generally catching up on their lives back home.

Finally, at 11:00 on Saturday night due to high winds and low fuel in the generator, the North Trek Internet Cafe was forced to close for the night.
