Easy Like...
Sunday morning. Or so they tell me. Days mean nothing here; all that matters is where we have to go and what we have to do and what fun we might have in the meantime. We are now camped at McDonald Pass, one night in a developed campground (with a toilet!). I was sad to leave our spot last night. Right after I wrote my last entry, as the moon was rising and the light fading, I went out to the middle of the meadow and watched the stars come out. One by one, I counted them. Most of them you could only see when you weren't directly looking at them. And the moon was spectacularly bright. Soon, though, it got too cold for me yet again, and I retreated to the tech trailer to hang out with the crew. I found Charlotte typing away, and when she said she was going to sleep in the RV that carries our tech stuff, I decided to join her. We slept head to toe on the fold-down couch and it was my first night indoors in weeks. I have to say, I missed the sounds of the outside night, but waking up in relative warmth was a beautiful thing. I don't think I'll be doing it again but it was nice, just for a night.

Today we broke camp in less than an hour. We get better every day. But after breaking camp we had a two-hour support team meeting to air all of our feelings and thoughts about how the trek was going. I was a little nervous about it, but in the end, I think it went beautifully. Everyone spoke their minds, and encouraged the better traits among one another, and also vented some frustrations. I felt great about it; I'm pretty sure everyone else did too. And the setting didn't hurt- we were sitting in the middle of the golden field I described yesterday, the morning sun warming our backs, eggs and bagels in our bellies.

The drive down the mountain and here to the Pass was terrific too, and not just because of the scenery. Our indispensable boy scout Stephen brought a case of incredible CDs, one of which is "Maroon" by the BareNaked Ladies. Do you feel a tangent coming on here? Cuz I do. What does this have to do with the trek? My general happiness, that's what. So I'm driving down this mountain, through this gorgeous land, listening to some of my favorite men in the world sing cool songs. Now I'm not a very good fanantic, since I don't know anyone's name in the band or really anything about them but I've always maintained that I'd marry a man who could write songs like that. Someone who could do something that extraordinary on a daily basis. The running joke among my friends and family back in New York was that I was seeking a fireman with a dog. Now that I actually know a fireman, who incidentally doesn't have a dog, it's much more difficult to objectify them. My work at Ground Zero and with the Red Cross endeared firefighters to me, but I never actually got to know any of them. And I know it's a little sick to want the kind of guy who runs into burning buildings every day, but, hey. I think that's extraordinary. However, I'm surrounded by mind-blowing people, and I couldn't choose who I think is the coolest.

But I'd still marry the guy from BareNaked Ladies. The one who sings high.

Tangent over, back to Trek News:

I just showered. This is big news, folks. My first shower in many, many days. I walked over to the tech trailer and our latest techie Damon said "Wow. You look better". Not quite sure how to take that. But I'm sure I do. I certainly smell better. The difference between the car ride over to the showers, with five stinky support team people, and the drive back, was noticable to all. Tonight we have a presentation by the forest service about mining, and afterwards we hope to celebrate Ravi's last night with us. He has to go back to UNC to start his last year of rotations and we are going to miss him like crazy.

I just heard that we're being fed "manwiches". I best go stir-fry some tofu.
