Dear America:
Field Report, Day 22

Oh, my gosh, am I on a public lands trek or what? The term trek implies having support and varied modes of travel. We have a great support team. From 7:15 until almost noon we alternated driving 4-wheel drove roads and getting out and hiking to make sure we stayed on public lands. Other days have started and ended this way, but not to extent that today did. We started with a short drive then hiked across a stream, which was swollen by the previous dayís rain, and then up and over a forested ridge to get back to the road. More driving and then again we hiked parallel to the road for about a quarter of a mile and then back in the 4x4s. Drive further, and then parallel the road on a side hill and then cross a beaver dam. Cool. Two more drives and two more cross-country bushwhacks. The last one was great because we ended up on a ridge overlooking Interstate 15 and the horses that were just on the other side of the freeway. We hiked down to the freeway, climb over a barbed wire fence and then race across the lanes. Children this is dangerous, do not attempt.

We are met by Joe (not the same one) who will lead us on the cross-country horse trip. Jocelyn Dodge, the Recreation Forester for the Butte Ranger District, and five members of the Backcountry Horsemen Association will also join our ride.

Hiking cross-country through a forest and riding a horse cross-country through a forest are not the same. On decent trails horses can travel three miles an hour without a problem. A hiker can travel one and a half miles or faster per hour. We took four and a half hours to go six miles. Near the beginning of the ride we tried to cross a wet meadow (bog), the guide, Joe got his horse nearly stuck in the mud and had to jump off. Scott, our outfitter, skirted the meadow and we followed. His mule, Molly, got stuck and he had to jump. It took a few minutes to get Molly out. After all of that, my horses thought he would try it too. Luckily he didnít get stuck and I survived the meadow. The horse would get even. The off-trail riding meant steeper ups and downs, logs to step over, and trees almost too close together to fit through. Five scrapes or bruises on my left knee and two on my right later we get to camp. I have a baseball size bruise on my left knee.

Two sisters, both former students of mine, Justine and Lindsie S. are horse lovers. In fact, they went to Girl Scout horse camp just before I left for training in Utah. So, even though the horseback riding has been very challenging I am coming around to their way of thinking. I have a very deep respect for the people who earn their living on the back of a horse.
