7:15 p.m. Nez Perce Trailhead, E. of Butte - It’s raining again. I’ve claimed a seat in the dodge pickup as a writing station out of the wet and cold. This shower started an hour ago, about the time we were getting ready for the excellent supper prepared by Michelle and Cheryl. Remember, this is Montana rain, so getting wet means also getting cold. Dry places are a premium around here, even though we erected all four of the 10’x10’ canopies behind the supply trailers. (The bright yellow canopies, by the way, emblazoned with “National Geographic Society,” have attracted attention everywhere we’ve stopped). I managed to get my tent set up in a mild drizzle before the deluge started. Actually, it rained harder yesterday—twice—once as we were starting to erect the canopies at Whitehouse Campground, then again when I went to bed. The rain on the tent reminded me of rain falling on my metal barn roof back home. It was a lullaby, and I slept like a baby.
Sherry Tavergie of the Wyoming Geographic Alliance and I set September 6 as the date I will attend the Wyoming Hunting and Fishing Exposition in Casper. According to Sherry, thousands of school children will be in attendance that day, so it will be the optimum time to publicize public lands. She invited me to share the Wyoming Alliance booth. Both Charlie and Dave were warm to the idea, even though it may mean I’ll need one of the trek vehicles for most of three days. We talked briefly about distributing some item—pencils or some other small, useful item—with the American Frontiers web site imprinted. Dave advised me to call Steven Maurer for suggestions. Incidentally, I realized I knew Sherry when she sent me an e-mail message yesterday. I recognized her last name as one of the participants in the National Geographic Society’s “Workshop on Water,” the first “Geography Awareness Week” workshop I also attended ten years ago!
My cell phone is completely oblivious to any towers that might be in the neighborhood. All it can say is “I’m searching!” Chances of getting into the tech trailer appear miniscule for several reasons: the trekkers get first dibs—and they are still there—and it is one of the few dry places in camp. The prospect of reaching the outside world tonight is slight. There’s another side to this situation, though: I’ve seen no television in a month, and I don’t miss it; I’ve only glimpsed local newspapers, and I hardly care what I read; I’ve heard numbers for the stock market on the truck radio while driving, but I don’t remember if the market was up today or down. Instead, I’m eager to explore another mountain stream like Jerrico Creek, I’m excited by the possibility of seeing more wildlife, and I’m interested in having another great conversation like the one I had this afternoon with Cheryl and Michelle. I enjoy driving on the mountain roads, as I did on the one-lane gravel path on the side of a cliff to pick up the trekkers yesterday, or driving the pickup with trailer as I did through forested valleys on I-15 this afternoon. I smile a lot and sometimes—all by myself—I surprise myself by giggling aloud. Fun? Hey, this trip is monumental!
