Day 23 - Sleep Interrupted

It is just after midnight, I am dreaming that someone is just outside my tent. I keep dreaming and it doesn’t change. I start to wake up and it sounds like a scrub oak rustling on my tent. There is only grass and one huge Ponderosa Pine tree outside my tent. I say, “Who is there? Go away!” Cathy hears me from her nearby tent and says, “What’s matter Julie?” I say, “There is someone there.” She says, “No there isn’t.” I say, “Yes there is.” Cathy points her headlamp toward my tent and sees the beady little eyes of the Skunk and says, “It is a skunk.” We both yell at it to go away. I am in my sleeping bag, very worried about being the social outcast in my team if the skunk decides to spray me. I shout and Cathy shouts and I look outside and watch the skunk amble away toward Cathy’s tent. He never arrives there. About an hour later, the skunk arrives again. I shout, “Go away.” Cathy the Cyclops aims her beam of light and the skunk slinks away. About every hour we repeat this. I finally give up and get up even earlier than normal. I walk into the RV trailer to make the morning coffee. Cathy arrives and begins to grill our day old KFC biscuits. I feel spoiled. It is great to have hot grilled biscuits with our coffee. We usually have to wait 1-2 hours for breakfast. At 6 am, I return to my tent and break it down. It is daybreak, so I get to see my tent was chewed away by my nighttime visitor-the skunk. I grabbed some overcooked eggs and climbed into the backseat of the Honda Pilot at 7 am. We take off and 4 wheel drive today’s route. We are done by 9 am. We sit at the gas station, which has no electricity. We call Bob and he brings us the Chevy-Diesel Truck. We drive August 25, 2002-4x4 wheel drive part. We have to walk a fence line, for about 1 to 2 miles. Jan accomplishes the shuttle with the mountain bicycle and then he pushes it through the ball bearing, cinder cone, pebble like soil with us. Then we hop into the truck and 4-wheel drive the forest service roads toward Sunset Crater. It is a ponderosa forest, which becomes starker and starker as we drive closer to the crater, which was an active volcano in 1064. The soil around this area is like little balls of volcanic black rock. We arrive at the KOA campground. It is a depressing place for tent campers. There is only dirt or gravel to put your tent on and our tents are literally 1-2 feet apart from each other. The homeless are leaving on the other side of the fence, which is about 20 feet away from us. The big treat is that we get to go out to eat tonight. I take some time off and go riding my bike into Flagstaff. I go to the coffee shop and have a soy latte. It is yummy. My first one in 1 month. Yikes. I miss my Kaladi coffee. I connect with my friends by cell phone. I miss my family and friends. Very Much. I get back, mess with my gear, shower and get ready for dinner.
