 The Trek: The Journals

Sunday, August 25. 10:00 p.m. Birch Creek Education Center.

Today we all got to ride ATVs. I crashed, but I didn’t burn. I turned it over on my right foot. It occurred on one of two shuttles during which the Support Team maneuvered the ATVs into positions to be used by the Trek Team after they hiked around private land. We had hiked to the top of Storm Peak to pick up the ATVs, then we returned with them to camp. The road was so treacherous that the four-wheel drive Hondas could not make it to the top, hence the need for our hike. It was a phenomenal sight from the top! I leveled my camera as best I could and took eight photos, one in each direction, so that I can establish a “view in the round” when I get home. Windy and chilly up there, too! We were well above 9,000 feet. And what a thrill to ride the ATV on the mountaintop and down the steep road!
But about the foot… We were through the toughest part of the trail and nearly out in the open when I lost my concentration. The ATVs in front of me kicked up a dust cloud and I was momentarily too close to see the trail clearly. The trail changed abruptly where a drainage channel cut across diagonally. I saw it-but too late. I knew immediately that I would be thrown, and the hollow, sinking feeling left me helpless. I was pitched to the right, and the ATV turned over on top of my right foot. I landed nearly upside-down on the slope, a sharp pain in my foot. I also must have bumped my tailbone, and I thought momentarily that I was in for big problems. I was clear of the machine, and other riders gathered around to help, so I lay still for a moment to be sure. Luckily, the perceived back injury was nothing. The sharp pain in my foot subsided, and I finished the ride. Later I discovered an elbow scrape and a bruised right hand, but they are not serious. My foot is bruised, discolored, and swollen slightly, so I put it in a bucket of ice water tonight. I’m limping a little, but I am probably more disappointed by my lapse in concentration than physically hurt.
Tonight we are staying at the Birch Creek Education Center, run by the University of Montana-Western (now a branch of the University of Montana). The staff have fixed us an excellent meal and served it to us in the conference center. Delicious. Equally welcome was the hot shower, and I have a bed to sleep in tonight for the first time since the Army barracks in Tooele.
Two members of the University of Montana-Western faculty presented a short program, explaining the revolutionary new curriculum format they are starting this year. It features one class at a time for three and one-half weeks; each class is worth four credit hours. It is experimental and will involve 75 students in three classes this year. The faculty are very proud of their experiential teaching methods (Rob Thomas: geology and Steve Mock: chemistry). I also had a nice chat with Paul Clark, the center director. The University of Montana-Western was started as a normal school, and it still is primarily concerned with teacher training. The center provides outdoor experiential science programs for grades K-12.
