I want my ATV!

Finally ATV Day! Awesome. The local Honda ATV dealer shows up to camp at 7:30am this morning with 6 ATVs (Honda). We start by 8-8:30am riding right from camp. We were all trained on ATV use and safety when we were in Utah for training before the trek started.

The day was filled with some pretty great trails riding with Matt (the Honda Dealer), John Erickson from the Forest Service and the local ATV riding club, The Mining City Trail Riders out of Butte.

Of course, I always want to ride faster than we are going and usually get pretty close to hurting myself.

We are following Matt for awhile but the break I asked if I could lead back to the Support Team at the road. He said “No problem.”
I took off and with no one in front of me to slow me down; I went flying down the mountain trail. I hit a water bar across the trail which is like hitting a big speed bump. I went flying in the air and the only thing in contact with ATV at one point was one hand. Maybe I went too fast…But it was fun!

We also had some private land to “go around” again, so we hiked a bit too.

I had my first encounter with cactus on one of the hikes. I simply slipped on a steep hill and put my hand right down on a small cactus. OUCH! I don’t know how many thorns I had in my hand but it looked like I was wearing a glove and it was bleeding too. I started to pull them out but the smaller ones were breaking so I decided to get down to the Support team and have Michelle the EMT pull the rest with tweezers.
It took a while to get them all and I still have some in my hand now.
I’ll have to be more careful in the future.

Saw my first coyote today at almost 8,000 ft near the end of the day.
More 4x4 and ATV tomorrow!
