Day 27-sunrise over the Grand Canyon

I woke up at 5 am at the base of a tall Ponderosa Pine Clump, on a bed of pine needles. I hear the group moving. It is time to rise in the dark. The mission is clear: to get to the Grand Canyon before sunrise. I pull my pants on, and stuff my sleeping bag into its stuff sack, roll up my thermarest and load them into the Honda Pilot. We load into the car; Jacob, Jessica, Antal, S. Kay and I. Off we drive to Lipan Point on the edge of the Grandest Grand Canyon. For many in our group this is the first time (8 out of 11) to see the canyon. For me, it is like visiting an old friend. I have traveled to the Grand Canyon many times. It welcomes me each time with beauty, vastness, and acceptance. I automatically feel happy when I am in the presence of the canyon.

We drive back to our camp, being silly and reflective. We see about eight deer and a coyote cross the road. I want to stop and watch, but we must press on. We have people to meet. We take 89 South to 180, Left on Coconino F.S. 417 to our camp.

We have a big meeting today. We have many folks come to talk to us. Folks from the Arizona Trail Association including Larry Snead and Dawson Henderson come to educate us about the Trail. It is a unique collaborative adventure. It is trail that covers 800 miles from Mexico to Utah. It covers public and private land. It is for nonmotorized travel.

Billy Cardusco from the CO Bar Ranch, which is now called Coconino Plateau Natural Reserve Land. It is a large tract of private land that runs livestock. It is a family business that has developed a complete land ethic to manage their lands. It was fascinating. It is based on learning and understanding to minimize effect on these lands. We have heard from many government agencies. It is great to hear from the family business perspective. Their slogan is to Just Participate! There is more information to be had on the Babbit Ranch website.

Dennis Lund is a major player in the Public Lands Journey. He is a retired Forest Service Employee who has helped greatly with the route. He is here today again with us. He is the moderator for today’s program. He brings up the fact that public lands are diversity of use and diversity of people, and diversity of issues.

Our trek begins late today. We start at 4 pm. I am off to hike with Jan, Richard, and Cathy for a couple miles. We are back from hiking. It was a beautiful day. We hike up and down. The sky is full of smoke from one of the two fires that are burning in Arizona. We talk to Tad Dent, a local rancher. He has been in this area since 1985. When asked about public lands, he says that the “the cows need to stay on them.” We ask him more questions. And he says that the cows are good for the land. He states that he needs 80 acres to feed one cow per year.

We get back from our hike and visit for a while. Time to relax, before dinner. We have a meeting to learn the latest changes in our schedule. It is time to turn in.
