Halfway Point
Near the Grand Canyon and Moqui Stage Stop, August 27, 2002

We are in a lovely park-like Ponderosa dry camp today. The trees are widely spaced, and from the series of lectures and seminars that we are getting on Ponderosa Ecology this must be just what the forests are supposed to look like. Big (huge!) trees, in small clumps, lots of space between them for grasses and small shrubby plants, a good healthy (though dry) forest.
No water, again, just a dry camp. The trekkers are getting ready to go into the Grand Canyon in 3 days. No, I will not be with them. But I will be with them in spirit. I will help shuttle the trucks and the motor home, and later the Hondas, over to the North Rim. It will be nice to have a couple of quiet days.
Ken Chapman, our executive producer for the trek, came in today. He will be staying with us for a couple of days. He brought us camelback water carriers and fleece hats, as it is getting cold at night here. He led us in a “Halfway Point” meeting. Lots of differences were aired and we all feel better about most things. We were also filled in on the big shindig planned for the meeting day, Sept.27 and Sept.28, in Salt Lake. Sounds like there will be plenty of dignitaries there to welcome us home. I hope that my husband Jerry and my kids Patrick and Chris can attend, but it does not look hopeful right now. We will be having a halfway party on Thursday.
