Wednesday, August 28
To Hull Cabin in Kaibab National Forest, AZ
Wednesday, August 28-thru Sunday, August September 1We are camping in an area where there is no noise, full moon and full sky of stars. Everyone we meet loves it here. The ranger hauls water in for us and tells of the mistletoe that is choking the trees. He is hot and tired and loves that we are there. Camp is setup and everyone begins his or her tasks for the day. We are located just about 3 miles from the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. WOW! When can we go in???? We all find a reason to go. Just driving the roads to get to the Rim is beautiful. Mule’s deer and lots of wildlife to see. We went for a sunset one night---awesome. We went to see the unbelievable drops at another site…incredible. The senses are awake now! I hear someone talking about how the kids are not bringing spotlights at night and ‘spotlighting’ the animals…there are pros and cons to this. The visual is fantastic but is it scaring the animals? One night we had beer biscuits and dump cake baked in the Dutch Ovens. It was amazing to watch. What an art! And the outcome was excellent. As many things, it takes many tries to make good food with your favorite tools…Also, we met one of the VIPs form the Canyon…Rupet the Mule. He was very large and had made hundreds of trips into the Canyon and was now retired working with folks like us.Another night we had more visitors and more information. And then a celebration of the half way mark. The talent show was fantastic. (see other journals for details). I am still just getting into the full swing of things here.I do know that my talent is cooking with the tools that I am familiar with so I begin to gather my tools. A few adjustments and things are ready. Things needed: 1. Always pack your favorite skillet. It can be used for many things including cooking!2. Always take a few of your usual spices…it saves the experimental steps.3. Make certain that there is enough for everyone and that everyone eats at the same time…this saves running out too fast J4. Grocery shop looking at the stores best offers and work from there. You can’t always find what you are looking for.5. Make things easy…use square containers with tight lids, they take up less space.6. Try to get 1 thing that each person might like…even if it is blue syrup.7. Be happy, enjoy, laugh, smile! Even bad food tastes better if you are laughing. It takes time to prepare so you will be up and getting things ready before anyone else…it’s great quite time too! Email me at samaltman@flash.net
