Hump Day
Got your attention, didn’t I? Well, it’s day 30. We are halfway there, more than halfway if you count the days we spent training for this adventure. Strange that now we will be counting down the days rather than just counting. 30 days until I have to return to my life, 30 days until I rejoin society, 30 more nights in a tent. I wonder how I’ll feel when there’s just a week left, three days, one day. Right now I feel like we’ve finally hit our stride. We can break down camp and set it up in minutes, we all pitch in whenever we see need, we finally have some free time almost every day to hike or read or write. We the support team has this time, rather; the trekkers’ days continue to overflow with activity. And as much as I’ll always wish I had been a trekker, as all of us do, there is one huge benefit to being a support person: I got to spend over two months, day and night, with this support team. I will miss them.

But! 30 more days! So no talk of that. What have I done so far on hump day? I took a car to the post office, separate from the group, to mail things for the trekkers and to pick up some stamps and such for the team. Last night we stayed at a trailhead called… uhhh… “Middle of Nowhere and Filled With Cowpies”. That’s not the real name but it could have been. We were witness to a spectacular lightning storm and woke all night to the crying of coyotes. It was a rough road in and out of this spot, but I was in a trusty Honda Pilot and I zipped easily over the rocky path. Someone left a Police CD in the CD player and so I serenaded the many cows I passed. I wonder if they’d ever heard “Message In A Bottle” before. If they had, they hadn’t heard me sing it.

I ran my errands, and waited as long as I could for the payphone, the only payphone in Lima, Montana, but a trucker was using it and he was looking awfully comfortable. I amused myself by watching the sheriff, who was chatting with a local. Only here have I seen sheriffs who actually wear jeans, a button-up shirt, a badge on their chest, and a wide-rimmed, black cowboy hat on their head. Amazing. But I really, really needed to call my brother Sean, if for no other reason than separation anxiety, and Mr. Trucker was not leaving the phone. I finally dragged myself away and left for today’s camp which is BEAUTIFUL. We are now at Stoddard Creek Campground, developed, but in trees and mountains and with the nicest-smelling pit toilet I’ve ever encountered. And I just had one of the best workouts of my life. Using tree stumps, benches, huge rocks from the fire, and the steep uphill of the nearest mountain, I just got a better workout than I usually do in the gym. Invention, ya know, is the mother of, you know.

In celebration of Hump Day, I am going to put up all of the trekker’s tents. They are on a really rough horseback trip today- 25 miles, I believe, the longest yet, and over rough terrain. I have also decided to try, I repeat, try not to worry about the fact that when this is all said in done, in those 30 days, I will have no home, no job, no car, and exactly $0.00 in my bank account. This is my current status but right now I am being fed and I’m living in a tent. And doing something I think is so important that I gave up all of the things on that list. So I’m going to give myself over to the mercy of the universe, and believe that if I work hard enough the Fates will create goodness and opportunity in my life. And if that doesn’t work I’m going to freeload off my brothers for a while.

Just kidding, Sean. And Ian. And Steve. And Kent.

P.S. Mom- send money!

Sigh. Just kidding again.
