Lees Ferry

I walk up in Cliff Dwellers Lodge #3. It is an old 1930-40’s style drive up motels with covered carports next to your room. It is so neat inside with all wood walls and ceilings. No phones, no TV’s, but it has hot and cold running water-a luxury that I haven’t seen much of in the last four weeks. Today is the half way point for the Public Lands Journey, which is exciting to think that we have accomplished that much. Though today I am even more excited about putting on the Grand Canyon. Our outfitter is Ted Hatch River Expeditions. I get up, shower, dress, eat breakfast and finish my packing. And I make some phone calls. We meet Sara Hatch and get instructions. We load into and van and we drive down to Lees Ferry and meet J.P. Running and his wife Meg Eiera. He says it is his second trip down the Grand Canyon and I know that they will be fun outfitters. We get more instructions. We get our P.F.D.’s fitted properly and we climb on the s-rig and off we go. We board the boat and I sit at the very front, which is nicknamed the bathtub. I figure that I will soon figure out why. Duh! It is a warm and sunny bright day. The river water is cold at 48 degrees. Our boat captain J.P. is very knowledgeable in all aspects of the canyon, particularly the geological history. He stops the boat often and tells us stories. Meg is the first mate and the cook. The boat is a puzzle piece that needs to be loaded and unloaded just so and they are experts. We pass through the echo cliffs Monocline and through the Paria riffle. We see the first Coconino sandstone appear. It is buff-colored sandstone that is prone to form cliffs. It emerges at river mile 4. It is 350 feet thick in the east part of the Grand Canyon. By the western end it disappears. We travel under the Navajo bridge at river mile 4 . The Navajo Bridge is 467 feet above the river and was completed in 1929. Just past river mile 5, the hermit shale appears. Badger Creek Rapid is the first big rapid on the Colorado River at river mile 8. It is the first smooth tongue of river water falling into big big waves that we encounter. It is fun and I realize why the front of the boat is called the bathtub. I take a bath. We stop for lunch at the sheer wall rapid on river mile 14. I lay like a lizard on a rock in order to warm up and dry out. That 48-degree water can chill you to the bone even though the air temperature is probably in the 90’s. Lunch is a feast with fresh meat, bread, vegetables and fruit. They even have chocolate to aid the digestion. At river mile 17 we go through House Rock Rapid, which has sheer walls and several big holes. It is rated and 7 out of 10 in lower water. We stop and take a hike at 20 at North Canyon. It is very beautiful and fun. We see a bighorn sheep next to the river and pull up close within 15 yards of it and it does not even blink an eye. We see lots of birds, flitting over the surface of the water to eat the insects flying above the waters surface. We see osprey and peregrine falcons and great blue herons. We stop for the night at river mile 23 . Meg and J.P. fix us an incredible dinner of steak, corn, and potatoes. I turn in before night falls to the sound of the rapids below me.
