August 30th

My day to ride with the trekkers! 25 miles today. I was introduced to my horse, ďBanjoĒ a 12 year old Appaloosa. Mel Montgomery, the outfitter for this trip gave me instruction on mounting and dismounting, turning left and right, stopping and backing up. I havenít been on a horse since probably a pony ride when I was five, but Banjo is such a great animal, so sure-footed and steady, I feel confident and ready to ride. We travel to the border of Idaho and Montana, across great vistas and landscapes of sage-it smells wonderful out here. We run into a short rain and hail storm on our way up the side of a mountain. The hard rain is stinging our faces and we keep our heads down while trying to stay in control of our stock. The horses are undeterred and keep moving forward. We are traversing switchback style and the Banjo never wavers. We get through the wind and rain and onto the other side of the mountain. It was exhilarating! Iíve always admired horses and never even gave a thought to owning one, but I could see where a true love affair with these animals could start. Seeing the country on horseback does offer a different view than back packing. Just the fact that you could travel farther and higher is worth riding next time. Yes, I was a little saddle sore for the next day or two and walked with a less purposeful stride, but Iíd do it again in a heartbeat. (Am I too old to wish for a horsy for my next birthday?) I said good-bye to Banjo and he took an apple from me, he may or may now know what a fun day I had but if I ever get back to Montana, Iím looking him up!
