The Big Ditch
Hull Cabin near the Grand Canyon - The trekkers left to go down the Tanner Trail into the Canyon today. Jessica, Jake, Jan, Richard, Cathy, and Wayne, our videographer from National Geographic, all headed out at about 4 pm. They will camp about halfway down, and then hike to Tanner Landing in the morning. There they will meet Bob and Julie, plus Lisa from the Public Lands Interpretive Association (PLIA), and some of the sponsors of our trip. They will overnight on the river, then float to Phantom Ranch, where they will overnight on Sunday. They will hike out on Monday to the North Rim. Kay, Sam, Ron, and I will be shuttling the vehicles to Jacob Lake on Sunday.
This morning we went to a Grand Canyon National Park and met with 6th graders from Oak Elementary School in Mesa Arizona. Kay, Jan and Cathy met with them and presented a short program about the trek. Kay made up a very nice PowerPoint with many pictures and Wetherbee Dorshow, our Earth Analytics Tech guru, helped get the presentation up for all to see. The kids then went out to attend a short program by the Park Interpreter Russell Baker, and found the importance of fire in the ecology of Arizona Ponderosa Pine forests. Most of the students seemed to really like the trekkers, and they have promised to e-mail us with questions. We hope to have more reliable Internet and e-mail this next week.
I am the new Web-Queen for Team South. I will be uploading pictures and journals as soon as I can get them ready. Sam has done an excellent job of taking over the job of food manager, freeing me to do this important job for you all.
Great News! My sons and husband will be able to join me in Salt Lake City for the joining ceremony on the 27th. We invite all of our readers and friends to come see us home, too. And check the itineraries, too. If we are in your neighborhood, please come by and say hello. The coffee pot is usually on.
