Summing up the days....
I know that I have not been writing as much as I should. I think about it a lot….I really do. So, I have turned over a new leaf. I will write in my journal everyday and if I can’t upload it to the web then please know that I writing daily. Actually, Rob and I made a deal that if he puts up my tent then I have to type his journals for him. So far it has kept me honest.

I will give you highlights of what has happened since the last time I wrote.

The Support Team started putting gummy bears in my lunch….its the little things that make me happy.
Rob’s Birthday. He is now 39. Wow! 39! The night before I made him a birthday card with a picture of him that we took in the Bob Marshall Wilderness. He is wearing a cowboy hat and a gun on his belt. It’s a great picture. Maybe I will post the picture. After making the card I get everyone in camp to sign it. It was really hard to keep it a secret from him because he is always out talking to everyone all the time. The next morning around 6am I woke up and couldn’t go to sleep, so I got up and went to Rob’s tent and sang a “Happy Birthday” song which is better than the old song that everyone sings and gave him his card. I remember that it was really warm that morning. The one thing I have had problems with is getting up in the morning when it’s really cold. All I want to do is snuggle down in my sleeping bag and not get out. But this morning was different. It was warm and I was antsy to start the day. I was the first to break my tent (which is rare), and had a great breakfast. After that, we headed down to canoe across the Clark Canyon Reservoir in a 30 foot canoe. With our guide Steve Morehouse who also the night before gave us a great reenactment of what Lewis and Clark did nearly 200 years ago in the very spot we sat. I was intrigued beyond belief. And then 80 miles on ATV. It was such a great day. I almost rolled the ATV I was riding. It was so scary. I was leaning on a big hill probably going 25 miles per hour and I hot a rock. The rock jolted my ATV and I was flung in a huge field of sage brush. I couldn’t stop the ATV. I just kept going. I realized that my thumb was still on the throttle control while pressing on the brakes. When I finally stopped I looked behind me and Kevin (the National Geographic videographer) yells “Are you OK?” By then I was so embarrassed and I couldn’t stop laughing. He kept saying that I was really lucky I didn’t fall off. After that I tried to go slow, but I kept getting being Rob and wanting to go faster.

The last two days of horseback riding are here and gone. This is bittersweet. I am glad that we don’t have to ride but at the same time, riding a horse isn’t so bad going up hills. That was nice and plus you can travel faster.

My birthday is on Sunday. I will 25. Not sure how I feel about that yet.

Mel the new horse outfitter that we rode with grew up in the area we are going to traveling in over the next couple of days. He will be leading us on a 3 day mule assisted backpacking trip. We are heading to the Centennial Mountain Range to get to Yellowstone National Forest. This will be our first National Park since Glacier. I really enjoy being in parks better than forests. Although, you can different modes of travel in National Forests than you can in National Parks.

Did I mention that my birthday is coming up? Sunday September 1, 2002.

Today, Friday August 30, 2002 we met a sheep herder. His name was Manuel from Peru. He spoke no English. This is where high school Spanish class came into hand. The only thing I could remember was “Me llamo Carlota” which he quickly responded with “Manuel.” So, I was out of the conversation. He had a huge horse, (I think a Clydesdale) mules, and dogs. He was so nice and talked about the sheep that he looks after and how much hard work it is. Mike gave him all the rest of his lunch that he didn’t eat for the day and the rest of us followed. Manuel was really nice. I think we would have talked more if there wasn’t a language barrier.
Since I don’t have a job, maybe I could be a Shepard. I am not really sure how hard it would be and if I would make any money. I better research it more in-depth.
All the trekkers got to take showers today in a small town called Kilgore. In the winter it is a town of 1 person. We were at the General Store, where we took showers, used the phone, there was a campground there, an area to play billiards, a hitching post outside for your horse and washers and dryers in the shower room. What a town!
