Campfire Friendships
Targhee National Forest

Well, we woke up today in Spring Creek which is back in Montana. I know, just when you thought we were done in Montana, we were back there. We have been travelling east along the Continental Divide, and were in Montana on one side and Idaho on the other. Tonight is our last night in Montana, when we go to Mel’s camp at Blair Lake.

Blair Lake Camp has two canvas wall tents and is used a lot all summer by Mel’s guests. There was creek close by and the lake a couple minutes down the trail. We sat high up overlooking the valley and off in the distance to the east was Jefferson Mountain. What a great view, and I made my mind up as soon as I saw this camp that I was going to sleep out under the starts again.

Today was Charlotte’s birthday, so I sang her happy birthday when she got up and gave her some gifts that the support team had stowed away in my bag to give to her today. Also, there was a card that everyone signed that I hid until this morning. I was happy to return the birthday wishes as she had done it for me.

We arrived in camp just in time to set up before dark. Steaks were on the grill and everyone was starving. We traveled about 14 miles, up and over the Continental Divide. Quite a workout. Some of us got to ride the horses if we wanted. I gladly rode the last mile or so on Foxy, the same horse I rode earlier with Mel. What a relief to ride up and over the last hill and into camp.

Again, the campfire was burning and great conversations were had. Everyone enjoyed more birthday celebrations when Chris presented Charlotte with a cake and a musical candle. She was surprised again, and smiling ear to ear.

Most folks went to bed shortly after dinner, which left Mel, Kimberly and I talking around the campfire for quite some time. I really enjoy meeting different people and learning about their lives. We were three very different individuals sharing stories, values, laughter, and the warmth of the fire. Mel invited me back out to go hunting with him and someday I will. I joked with Mel about my coffee mug- I left it a little too close to the fire last night, and it was slightly burned since it was made of plastic. The mug has Jack Rich’s, our outfitter from the Bob Marshall Wilderness, name on it, so I joked with Mel how he was probably burning it on purpose because it has another outfitter’s name on it. Turns out both Jack and Mel are good friends and speak highly of each other. I took a picture with Mel and the mug so I could send it to Jack. Oh, yeah, Jack, Mel says to stay off his side of Montana! Only kidding of course. Sleeping out brought out a few shooting stars, as I reflected on how I enjoyed the day and my new friends.

Both of our camps were probably around the 8,000 feet elevation level, but by now, I hardly feel the difference.
