Headwaters of the Missouri
September 2, 2002

Last night we camped at Blair Lake. This beautiful natural lake looked untouched by any human. The water was a deep turquoise blue and seemed so inviting. So, this morning we hiked down to the lake and around the other side to get to bottom of the next ridge we had to climb. I am never much on maps or knowing exactly where we are going, so, not until late this morning did I realize we would be crossing the headwaters of the Missouri River. Before we got there, we hiked to Lillian Lake, which is where the first white woman spent the winter in the Centennial Valley. After our stop there, I chose to ride for the rest of the afternoon on a horse. I was feeling tired, but after ten minutes on a horse, I realized I made a poor decision.

Late in the afternoon, we found the headwaters of the Missouri and all drank water from a stream near by. There was no water actually flowing from the Missouri. We all signed our names to a jar that was hidden in rocks near the mouth. Also, there was a B chiseled in the rock from the Brower Expedition from 1895 to 1896 trying to find the headwaters and they were successful. It was pretty neat to see that B still engraved on the rock. Its was better than going to a museum or reading it in a book. I found it and saw it.

I wish my history classes in school were more field work rather than classroom. I have learned so much more this way.
