Yellowstone!!!!
September 3, 2002

Itís never a days rest here for trekkers. We got in from our mule assisted backpack trip last night, did laundry and now we are repacking for a 2 night over night into Yellowstone. Even though I am exhausted, I canít wait for Yellowstone. This has been the one place I have been looking forward to. Two years ago, when I biked across the United States, I pedaled across the sign for Yellowstone. So, this is my first time here.

From seeing movies to pictures, I have a lot of preconceived notions about what Yellowstone is supposed to be. I was expecting to see green trees, flowing rivers, hot springs pools and tons of people. What I saw was: no people, burned trees, no rivers and no hot pools. We hiked in through the Targee National Forest and into Yellowstone. The only indication we were given that we were in the park were two little orange flags and a well defined trail. It felt very anticlimactic. This isnít what I was expecting. But I still wanted to take in all of what Yellowstone had to offer.

The trail was pretty flat and the others were hiking about 3.5 mph. Still in this nostalgia of being in a park again I wanted to walk slower. I hiked fast enough where I would be seen by the others but slow enough to really take in my surroundings. I remember hearing somewhere that a Native American said that people these days walk too fast. They hike with their head down, and miss everything around them. Keeping that in mind I tried to look at everything and listen.

Later that night, during dinner we heard the most magnificent sound ever. Elk bugling. It continued all night long. It was the best sound to hear and you could see where they were and there seemed to be about ten elk, bugling all night. Amazing.
