The Wave

Wake up America! There’s a whole world of incredible sights just waiting for you on our public lands. It seems like everyday we see and experience places even more spectacular than yesterday.
We were off by 6:30 a.m. this morning to meet BLM guides to hike three miles into an area called The Wave. We were told to pack lots of water, so I carried three liters. The hike began through orange sand which sucked my boots to the ankle. Arresting rock formations rose on either side of the trail that looked like crisp layers of crescent rolls. We alternated between walking on slippery rocks and walking on sand dunes. I could imagine myself in the deserts of Egypt. Becky Hammond mentioned that hikers must have a permit to get into the area, and most are gone six months in advance. Walking uphill in sand sure drained the energy out of my body. By 10:00 we reached The Wave. It looked like taffy with orange, red, pink, and yellow stripes. With all the sand and rippled rock formations it was easy to imagine that a great ocean must have once existed there. We were each given time to explore, eat, or just sit and meditate.
Becky took us to a nearby area where there were an abundance of dinosaur tracks fossilized in the rocks. A place like this seems older than time. It clouded up and on our hike out it began to rain. We were taking a higher path back, so the rocks were slippery. Some of the rocks looked like biscuits baking in a skillet. With the rain I thought of syrup on the biscuits.
I discovered that it’s not any easier walking in wet sand up to my ankles than dry sand. I’ve also discovered an important fact about hiking in a group—never be last. The hikers in front will occasionally wait until you catch up, but as soon as you arrive they take off again. So the people in front get rest stops. The slow hikers must just keep plodding onward.
