Still raining
Dear America:
Field Report, Day 39

Our backpacking trip started with a walk around to avoid some private land near Jackson Hole. At the end of the soggy walk we met the Bridger-Teton National Forest Supervisor Kniffy Hamilton, Susan Marsh, Recreation staff and Linda M. from the Jackson Ranger District. They supplied maps and information about our hike. We were told the trail would be difficult to find, at times, and that since it was raining the mud would be a problem. They were 100% correct.

Even though the first 5.6 miles were on an old mining road and the slope was gentle the hiking was not easy because of the intermittent rain. The trail was beginning to get sticky. The next three plus miles were tougher, the game and social trails began to interfere with our ability to stay on the real trail. After reaching our highest point of the day we could look back and see the town of Jackson Hole and then look south to find a valley with no visible trails. We searched for nearly and hour and then decided to camp, since the weather was getting ugly.

I tried to pinpoint our location on the map and by using the GPS (global positioning system) and my years of experience. I called Charlie (back at support camp) on the satellite phone and asked for waypoints for GPS so we could find the trail in the morning.

We crawled into our tents at 7:30, for the night, in the rain. Our Coleman tents kept us dry.
