Halls Crossing to Bullfrog,UT…Ok, now, this is a road...
..and it warns of possible impassable areas – ha! , it didn’t warn of my legs shaking while looking down…So we are off from Wahweap Marina to Monument Valley where the colors are purple again and where an on coming car flashes his lights, I assume I am speeding and there is a police car near--- wrong…there is a very, very large cow on my right about to cross the road in front of me---thanks for the warning. Whew…missed that accident. The road is showing mud and some sign of flooding so I am cautious , on thru Mexican Hat. Next area , I had never driven on a 1 lane road that warns of 5 mph switchbacks known as Utah Route 261, nor did I know what that meant…until now. But I did make it all the way up and down without panic setting in. Yeah! And the view….worth every nerve flinch in my lower back. I am certain I was flying !! Once at the top, I stopped to look over the vast land. Once again…how can it be this big…? Once more, I am touching the sky! On to Halls Crossing via 276 and boarded the ferry ride to Bullfrog …and wow! Bullfrog had just had a torrential rain and the mudslides had almost completely defaced the just opened campsites. I have never seen dried mud looking like curls of leaves with cracks. It was impossible to see where the sites were. Teams of workers were trying to scrape the mud back onto the hills and hopefully clear the areas for visitors coming in. Bullfrog is known as “uplake” which is the upper half of Glen Canyon NRA. Near is Defiance House, a site accessible only by water, where you will get information about prehistoric Indian life. I had a chance to talk with the Campground Host and learned that the area had just been completed a few weeks ago. Due to the mud slides the architect had just been thru and viewed the damage…and was said to be a bit sick to see his work look this way. He was working quickly to get things back into the original state. I bicycled around the hills and was again without words over each ridge. The view…colors, colors, colors. Also, I learned that this part of the lake was at least 50 feet down, and with the rate of 2” down per day that by next year some of the Indian Ruins would be exposed which might prove to be incredibly interesting. While there, and after tracking tons of mud in, on and around everything I own, I decided to check out the local laundry. I found out that if I purchased my tokens at the Marina Store that it would save me a lot of money. I also noticed that next to the laundry there is $2 shower, and you can mail your postcards from the Post Office next door. Life is good. Email me at samaltman@flash.net
