from Bullfrog to Goblin Valley State Park
I left Bullfrog going towards Goblin Valley located 12 miles past Temple Mountain Junction on Highway 24…thru Hanksville elevation 4,300 ft, named after Ebenezer Hanks and was one of Butch Cassidy and the Wild Bunch supply stops. I , however, stopped at Blondie’s Café….what a treat, burgers just like I like them…and information about where to get the freshest fruits, veggies and meat in a few days to welcome back the rest of the team. Today is my brother Wally’s birthday…I finally found a phone and called him. It is difficult because my cell isn’t in range today. Birthdays are important so a pay phone was found at Johnson’s Market which also had fruit and milk and the cashier gave me on a new gadget to peel Sunkist fruit! I will be giving peelers to the team at our next meeting. ….and the stones look like little smurfs…I feel playful here…giggly…or goblins or something. “Scores of intricately eroded hoodoos greet visitors to Goblin Valley” quoted from the Utah State Parks Field Guide. They remind me of things that my son Michael would build with wet , dripping sand at the beach ….only much bigger. It is again – awesome! According to the information, cowboys had great stories about the Goblins. I imagine that when they made a campfire that the reflection of the large, incredible figures would become distorted and dance about. The dirt roads back into the land were fantastic sights also. There was a rough, dry area all around and then just a few trees with leaves would appear out of nowhere. The contrast was very noticeable. The geological reason is that millions of years eroded this Estrada Sandstone. I am camping in Goblin Valley State Park Campground, UT. The campground is different than any other I have been to. After driving around twice to check out the few site offerings , verifying that there were no flat areas and that the area was not quite what I expected I pulled in anyway. It seemed strange that with all the open space this campground is small and not very inviting. Oh well, it’s time to set-up for the night. While I got ready for the evening, I watched 4 other travelers do exactly what I had…circled twice, etc. They too decided to just stay and I had a chance to talk with a few campers. The first was from MI and was traveling to the Grand Canyon next. We talked about the beauty of the sights and her concerns about not having handicap areas especially since her husband needed some access. I talked to her about the North Rim and gave her some ideas…Jacobs Lake, the Lodge and more. The next visitors were from Kansas and they were miffed about the camp. She was photographing the unbelievable sunset which started in the West and finished in the East due to the reflection….but was concerned about the slope of their site. To my left was a couple from Germany who had been rained on for the last 8 days…and were nervous since their tent was below the hills…but were ready for the rain anyway. All were anxious to know from each other more places to see and all had the same feelings. This place is unbelievable. The sky, the land, the sunsets, the stars….the United States !…..Oh !!!!!!! I am ready for sleep and an awful noise is whooshing around my RV….blowing and blowing and rattling everything….like nothing I have heard before…I can’t explain it….it is like a dirt devil surrounding me and moving me around….too long, this is not funny anymore, this is becoming annoying. It keeps happening for about an hour…then - - stops - - dead still ! Hummmmm……could this be why it is named Goblin Valley???? I spoke to the young Germany travelers the next morning…he let me know that theirs lasted about 2 hours…hummmm……another wonder in my travels……..
