Remembering America
when Cathy went to Washington, D.C. they gave her a U.S. flag from the Capitol to fly over our camp during the Trek. Today we hung it on the second deck of the houseboat and had a small ceremony in remembrance of the terrorist attack last 9-11. Bob was in the Pentagon when the second plane crashed. Richard was also in New York. Of course, Rob, our New York fireman, was there doing rescue work. His brother, also a fireman, was killed. Bob said a few words about the event and I sang "America the Beautiful." I think we all were teary-eyed and solemn. Later we hiked into Cottonwood Canyon. there are a lot of well-used trails and even some ruins there. We all climbed up to a high point and sat down to rest. The talk continued of last September. Richard shared his experiences of being in New York at the time the planes hit. After a bit everyone got quiet, and we each sort of went off on our own. We met back later. Cathy had brought a trash bag and we filled it with litter. Some things we found--golf balls, beer and coke cans, a child's book, towels and clothing, lots a plastic items, a toy boat, and a dart. We say it everywhere we go--"Leave No Trace" and "Pack out what you pack in." After lunch it was sunny and hot, so we hopped in a motorboat and looked for a good place to swim. We anchored near Hole in the Rock. The water in Lake Powell is clear, green, and refreshingly cool. Jessica and I weren't sure that we could swim to the rocks and then back to the boat, so we grabbed the boat and pulled it with us. We got tickled and laughed so hard that we couldn't swim. We did make it to the rocks where Jake was climbing out and diving in. I saw two large carp swim by. Surprisingly there are a lot of people on the lake. Since it is the middle of the week I would expect everyone to be at work.
Allen and Sharon Malmquist came this evening to share the history of Hole in the Rock with us. I would have known by their presentation that they were former school teachers. Sharon dressed for the era and read from an authentic journal of one of the Morman travellers. They showed slides and played music also. Tomorrow the Trekkers climb out of Lake Powell through Hole in the Rock. We saw it earlier and it's incredible to believe that 250 people with wagons and animals came down the 900 ft drop.
