Day 49- Capitol Reef to Elkhorn

I am cold, hungry, and tired. For breakfast there is grits or oatmeal. I can't eat prepared oatmeal, because they put milk proteins in it and I am allergic to milk proteins. Sam makes grits, but the grits are so gritty that I cant' eat them. I hand her back my bowl. I eat a power bar for breakfast and call it good. This is not how I anticipated the food to be on a physical active 60 day trek. Last night we were served one hamburger each, and out of the three left over, two went to the park ranger who visited us. I think I wasn't the only one who left the supper table still hungry last night. We hiked over 6 miles yesterday, and trekked for over 7 hours and I need more than one hamburger with left over spaghetti and can corn for dinner. I feel like we are on budget dining with not enough to eat since we hiked out the north Kaibab Trail. I don't understand why.

We leave a very nice campground this morning. It is green with real mat of grass covering the campground with plenty of space for all and beautiful trees and Capitol Reefs in the background. I liked it. I want some more of it. But we move on.

Today we start 4-wheel driving. Some of today's driving is actually challenging. The first private property that we hike around is to go straight up a hill. I walk across a shattered petrified tree stump first thing. The ground is the nondescript gray stuff with little vegetation. We crest the hill, and Cathy tries to bring us to talk about our We have a river crossing, the Fremont River that drains this area. I take my hiking boots off and put my aqua shoes on to protect my feet from the sharp rocks. As I climb up the steep 3 or 4-foot wash wall I slip and fall back into the river. I try it again and make it out. We hike a short way farther and there is Jacob and the Honda Pilot and Kay with the Honda CRV. They recount their harrowing river crossing and we are on our way, 4-wheel driving done the road. We do another 2 or so mile walk around private land and try to talk through our differences. Cathy tries to get us to talk but ...

I resume my rock hunting and enjoy the land. We hope into the vehicles again and drive through some really neat stuff. Betonite hills, I have to go look them up, because I don't know what Betonite is. We drive up and up until we are out of the valley that holds Capitol Reef and we move up into Pinon and Juniper Forest and it is beautiful. Jake stops and finds a bull snake crossing the road and we stop and play with him for awhile, then Jake lets him finish crossing the road. We have another walk around and it is through the PJ forest, which I love. We meet Kay and Jacob and have lunch in the middle of the road on the Fishlake National Forest, just past the Capitol Reef Boundary. Kay sings us a beautiful Gospel song. Then Jake sings a beautiful acapella song. We are blessed with two great singers.

We arrive at the Elkhorn campground in Fishlake National Forest. Dorothy we are out of the Canyon country and into the high forest. We camp just under 10,000 feet and it feels like fall for the first time. The aspens are turning yellow and shimmering in the wind as I write this.
