Roundtable---a place to learn
This morning we met for a roundtable discussion organized by Stephen Maurer, from Public Lands Interpretive Association. The invitees were from the community, All Terrain Vehicle organizations, ATV manufacturers, Bureau of Land and the trek team members. It was our opportunity to learn more about the Rocky Mountain ATV Jamboree happening here in Richfield, Utah.
The ideas that really impressed me were:
Strong volunteer groups that care enough to be committed to taking care of the trails. The people involved have been giving of their time and energy for years in this community and others.
There is a very different side of ATV riders than I had envisioned before. You know, I have to say that I had stereotyped them. Fast, not caring about the environment, etc. Sorry, I was definitely wrong. Max suggested that we walk around and talk to the participants of the Jamboree. I did. I met Jim from Butte, Montana, retired now rides for fun with his club in Butte. As we were talking, one of the guides handed him a plastic bag to collect trash. He took it, being familiar with cleaning up any bottles, plastic and paper wrappers that they would happen to see along the way. It is what they do. Jim, like a lot of his friends would not be able to see much of the wonderful back road scenery if it were not for his ATV. His knees and back are a bit of a problem. It is what Max called the “Gray Wave”. Baby boomers beginning to retire and they want to be able to see more than just what can be seen from the highway. They want to experience nature. Jim had a well trimmed beard, a black bandana on his head and twinkly blue eyes. This is something he truly loves and cares about keeping for his and his friend’s grandchildren so he works with his club members to maintain trails and educate the public about safety issues and caring for the land. He is one of the many people that I met and talked to that said about the same thing. I am very impressed.
I also met and talked with Dan Klein, President of the Off Highway Vehicle Council. Dan was in a diving accident 15 years ago. He is in a wheelchair now. On his ATV he can have outdoor experiences that he could not have otherwise, being in the forest on the trail as we were yesterday. I am sooo happy to know he is not kept from the beauty and wonder of those areas.
Multi-use trails mean that people with different interests can work together to have trails appropriate for all. Sometimes the motorized trails and non-motorized trails converge for a short time, but sometimes they are far apart.. The Great Western Trail has something for the quiet minded as well as those that like to go a little faster.
After the roundtable Julie and I collect laundry from anyone in our group that needs some clean clothes. We have all taken turns. It has given me new appreciation for the ease I have at home with my own washer and dryer. We take the time to write in our journals while the clothes swish and tumble.
Another thing I have a great appreciation for is a hot bath, as I have probably said before. We are staying in a motel for TWO nights in a row, yeeha!
