High on the Wasatch Front on ATVs, it's easy to suspend mindful things and let go to the worldly things. We were sky high in a spectacular environment that climbed through beautiful fir, spruce and aspen forest to open alpine where the clean thin air energized our spirits.
Led yet again by Max Reid, our trail wound through forest and along steep wooded slopes until we descended to a valley floor and then up again to the brisk cold air among the mountain tops. It is hunting season here, and we were traveling through a trophy bull elk hunting unit. Other ATV riders waved as we passed. Hunters in pickups flagged us with a friendly finger to say hi.
Somewhere at a halfway point in our day, Max would pass us off to another Forest Service employee and return back on the trail from which we had come. It was difficult to say farewell to Max, for he had been so fun and helpful. We've been making a lot of friends on this Journey.
Our new guide, Andrew Jackson, who reminded us that he's named after the only president to be impeached, suggested an alternative route to Ferron Lake Campground. This trail, he said, was recently downgraded from a black diamond, or very difficult trail, to one of greater ease thanks to efforts by volunteers to reconstruct the trail. The trail passed along a huge landslide of several years prior. Immense and awesome, the landslide is said to have been the third largest landslide in the country at one time.
Rock paths between log guide rails created an excellent pathway across swamp areas that at an early state were deeply rutted and damaged. The grass has grown over the ruts and they are difficult to distinguish.
The air may have been cold and energizing but it also held some heaviness. For the first time during the Journey, I felt a touch of melancholy. The Journey would soon be over. Our adventure would be over in eight days. Our lives, however, have been filled to the brim with something new and exciting.
We know that arriving in Salt Lake City from Mexico without stepping on private land is one of the main goals of our journey. But has our public lands message reached across the gulf of unawareness that exists in America, from those who know of the public lands bounty and those who don't? When and if we find out our impact, I hope our smiles spread as wide as they did today. The joy of these days cannot be expressed in words.

But to Jessica Terrell and Jake MacLeod, I can say "Thank You!" The twosome hiked to the top of a mountain while the trekkers were doing our thing and brought down some snow. That's special because for the entire Journey I've wanting nothing more than a blue raspberry snowcone. We had the blue raspberry syrup that Sam had bought but it wasn't until Jessica and Jake brought down the snow that we could make snowcones. They, the two snowcones I consumed, were delicious.
Thoughtful just begins to describe Jessica and Jake.
