Public Lands Day
Our day began at 6:00 a.m. and ended at midnight. although cold and windy in the morning, it turned out to be a warm, sunny day. "This is the Place" park in Salt Lake City is beautifully placed high over the city. Booths from various sponsors surrounded a stage. characters like Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl posed for pictures with youngsters and Trekkers. Coleman had the world's largest stove and Honda had their new energy saving cars on display. We walked a mile with Secretary of the Interior, Gayle Norton, and received a golden mile pin. We planted a tree with the Forest Service. Then we reenacted the team joining and listened to even more speeches and thanks. Today we were awarded gold medals with the American Frontiers logo on one side, and a map of the trek on the other side. Lunch was Dutch Oven chicken, only fitting I guess to start and end the trek with Dutch Oven. Then finally we got to go to the hotel and take showers. The whole day seemed like one long meal. When we arrived at Snowbird, we had a reception with drinks and snacks for an hour and a half, then moved right into a steak and salmon supper. Of course the best part to me was the entertainment provided by the teams. Jake and I sang several songs, Jake performed his poem "Excelsior," Lori sang "Call of the Wild," then Jake, Jessica, and I did our linedance. From the North team, Michelle sang, then Bob VanDevan and Bob Ashley showed slides of their journey and made humorous comments. Jan surprised Cathy and me by talking about our inexperiences and experiences, and awarding us handkerchiefs that had printed on them "off the porch" degrees. Then the worst part came: when we had to say good-bye to everybody. Lots of hugs, lots of tears, and lots of promises to meet again or stay in touch. I was so glad that my sister flew in from California to share these final moments with me and meet some of my new friends. We shared a suite with Cathy at the hotel, so Jake and Jessica came in and all of us stayed up till midnight--trying to prolong that final good-bye. We're all going home profoundly affected by this journey--by the land, and by the people we've met along the way. It's not over. It's just beginning.
