General Logistics/2nd Alternate. Stephen is a Virginian, born and raised. He came into the world on November 24, 1983, as the second child of Chris and Eileen Braunlich. He was preceded by his older brother Christian, and was followed by his younger siblings Brian and Catherine Braunlich, respectively.

Stephen began his career in Scouting as a member of Pack 1519. He worked his way through the ranks of Cub Scouts and bridged over into Troop 1519. While in the Troop, he earned his Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star and Life ranks.
Through Venturing and Boy Scouts, he has participated in several different trips. These have had a great impact on him, especially his 10 day and Rayado treks at Philmont Scout Ranch. He has also gone to the 2001 Canadian National Jamboree, the 1997 National Scout Jamboree, backpacking at Len’Hoksin in Goshen, canoeing at Cedarlands Scout Ranch and Florida Sea Base. In addition, Stephen has gone to Rock Enon and Goshen Scout camps, as well as caving and ascending at Eagles Landing, the Dolly Sods, Hike-o-Rees, and camporees. Stephen has also raced competitively at the Sea Scouts North East Region Championships, where he placed 5th.

For his Eagle Scout project, Stephen repaired the Matildaville Trail at Great Falls National Park. Using gravel, he filled in ruts that had been worn in from frequent use, and installed water bars to prevent erosion of the trail. He would like to thank everyone who helped with the planning and execution of the plan, especially his parents, Rangers Scott Pardue and Jesse Reynolds, Cooper Wright, and John Tillery.

In his free time, Stephen enjoys playing pick-up sports, and other outdoor activities, especially hiking, camping and sailing. In addition, he has served on his school newspaper (The Current) for four years as a staff writer, Op/Ed Editor, News Editor, Business Manager, and most recently as the Editor-in-Chief. He is also an active member of the Byzantine Catholic Youth, and has run track, played badminton, and debated.

Stephen has been accepted to the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA. Before attending the school, though, we will participate in a joint back-country trek between Venturing and the National Geographic Society.

In the long term, Stephen hopes to never become complacent with his life, and hopes to always live up to his life philosophy, "carpe diem."

****2004 UPDATE****

Stephen Braunlich, General Logistician and Second Alternate on the North Team, is an Eagle Scout from Virginia and at 18 was the youngest participant. “The Journey profoundly impacted my life, both spiritually and mentally,” he said. “While hiking among the jagged mountains of Glacier National Park, my firm belief in the existence of God was proven by the beauty of His creation. I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that there was someone who had made this and brought me to it.

“Mentally, the Journey challenged me to learn more about our public lands and to be able to defend assumptions and ideas I had long held to be true. I left with some ideas reinforced, others changed, and new ones implanted. Not letting them rest uselessly in my mind, I tried to spread them through discussions, debates, and as a ranger at Philmont Scout Ranch, which uses pubic lands.”
