Team: South
Wednesday, August 7, 2002
Silver City, New Mexico
As Team North packs their horses through the Bob Marshall Wilderness in Montana, Team South will be spending the day in Silver City, attending a roundtable discussion about the meaning of wilderness in the 21st century, including how we affect it and how it affects us.

While wilderness issues are always timely, the location for this event is significant. The Gila National Forest was where young Aldo Leopold first recognized the need for land management which took into account the interdependence of all the species in an ecosystem, a discovery which ultimately led to the creation of the Gila wilderness, the first of such in the country.

For more information about wilderness areas, and the Gila wilderness in particular, please visit our special exhibit (link below). For more information on this and on other events, please browse our events listings.
