Team South covers the last of the Gila National Forest, hiking and enjoying the comfort of an air-conditioned four-wheel drive. They are driving north towards Reserve, New Mexico, and will be hiking about 8 miles on the way, in order to stay on public lands.

This section of the Gila National Forest is a jumble of small mountain ranges and river valleys. Reserve, where there is a historic Forest Guard Station, is at the north end of the Saliz Mountains, on the San Francisco River. This end of the Gila gives way to the vast, arid plains of the northern Chihuahuan desert.
