Team North gets to break out the motorized vehicles today & whiz along the roads and trails of the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest. Tonight they'll stay at the Birch Creek Education Center, a large and well-equipped educational facility operated by the Western Montana College of The University of Montana in partnership with the Forest Service.

Team North is passing through the Pioneer Mountains, which made news at the end of the 19th century for its rich veins of gold. Just west of where Team North is traveling, the Pioneer Mountains Scenic Byway winds through the high granite peaks, passing the ghost town of Coolidge and the abandoned Elkhorn silver mine. Today these mountains are deserted and peaceful-- at least they will be when Team North dismounts their ATVs and hikes cross-country!
