Team North is backpacking through the deep lodgepole pine forests of Yellowstone National Park today, looking forward to the showers and toilets of Madison Campground. As they work their way towards the world-famous geysers and other thermal features of this first national park, hopefully they'll stop to look around & appreciate the undisturbed beauty of the park's backcountry.

Yellowstone National Park is the core of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, one of the largest intact temperate zone ecosystems remaining on the planet. This geologically active plateau is home to the grizzly, the wolf, herds of free-ranging bison and elk, as well as hundreds of other animal species. Although millions of people come to this park every year, only a tiny percentage make it into the backcountry. Team North may feel today like they are back in the time of the mountain men, when John Coulter first wandered through, hunting beaver for the fur trade in Europe. When he reported his discovery-- a land of abundant game, pocked with boiling springs, seething mud pits, and intermittent spumes of scalding water, no one believed a word of it. Today, "Coulter's Hell" is one of the world's top destinations, beloved for its geysers, its scenery, and its vast, virgin expanses of land.
